The triple sector test campaign at our High-Pressure Combustor Test Facility (HBK1) provided valuable insight on how the fuel composition affects non-CO2 emissions of modern aero engines.
Three different fuels (Jet A-1 representative of the world average composition provided by Neste, an ultra-low Sulfur Jet A-1 from Kalundborg Refinery and a HEFA-SPK supplied by Coryton), were used during the campaign at various engine relevant conditions. The tests were carried out together with an international team of researchers from the University of Helsinki.
In addition to direct emission measurements from the combustor, studies were also conducted on ice crystal formation from emitted non-volatile particulate matter (nvPM). These investigations provide a unique dataset, which describes the influence of individual fuel and operating parameters on the particulate emissions and climate impact.
Together with the results from an upcoming campaign on our single sector combustor, investigating an even larger variety of different SAF, this campaign complements the later planned engine tests in the project, to be performed at the project partner Airbus.
The project PACIFIC will then work with these data to evaluate the potential of future SAF to mitigate the non-CO2 effects of aviation. 🌍🌱
